Sheer Poetry of Form
Marley Eternit’s Acme Double Camber clay plain tiles have helped realise the poetic ‘S’-form roof of
Quintain House, perfectly showcasing exemplar sustainable architectural and landscape design.
Beauty – the Exception
Exceptionally this Weekly Insight reproduces a promotion by Marley for one of its special roofing products.
We’re doing this because the whole project struck us as extremely beautiful, as well as enabling planning permission to be obtained for an exceptional building.
One of Less than One Hundred
Quintain House has another claim to fame: it is one of fewer than 100 homes over the past 15 years to have met the stringent standards for the National Planning Policy Framework Paragraph 55, which allows for construction of buildings of ‘exceptional quality or innovative nature in design’.
Architectural design, inspiration and unrivalled roofing craftsmanship have combined to produce a roof that is both visionary and innovative.
The striking and seamless curving roof is the standout feature of Quintain House. A unique two-bedroom house in rural Gloucestershire.
Its flowing lines disguise a complex roofing substructure that was achieved through the patience, diligence and flexibility of the entire project team.
How It Was Done
To cope with the extreme rise and falls of the roof the team had to devise a unique battening solution and then securely fix almost
60,000 Marley Eternit Acme Double Camber clay plain tiles.
Highly Textured Aesthetic
Along with flowing lines, the project’s architectural consultant was keen to deliver a highly textured appearance.
With its longitudinal and latitudinal camber, the Acme Double Camber clay plain tile’s unique double curve was the ideal choice to create the
60,000 Hand Cut Tiles
At 820m2, the roof was a significant area; to achieve the design vision, each of the 60,000 tiles had to be individually marked and cut by
hand to match the space requirements of all the roof sections. With some areas having pitches of just 21°, the team was mindful of adhering to the
latest roof fixing standard (BS 5534), as not only did the roof have to be stunning to look at, it also had to be waterproof, secure and built to last.
Extra BREEAM Credits
Marley Eternit’s Acme Double Camber tiles are also accredited to the BES 6001 framework standard for responsible sourcing,
which means projects using them, such as Quintain House, can now achieve extra credits under BREEAM.
Quintain House is a magnificent example of what can be achieved when architectural design, vision, product quality and expert craftsmanship come together.
It represents a high water mark in roofing inspiration and achievement.
Not One for Prefabrication
While this beautiful roof was not one for factory prefabrication, elements like walls and floors can always be considered for OSM (Off-Site-Manufacture).
There is little doubt that integrating the use of more components that are produced off-site under factory controlled conditions, can go a long way to
helping to prevent accidents on-site. This includes the availability of carefully selected complimentary components and methods, for which our expanding
Specialist Merchants division is increasingly active, as well as providing unusual and hard to find environmentally sound, eco-friendly, sustainable and
complimentary building products and components.
Your Partner in Development
One-Off, or multiple units, whether you are an architect, builder or private client, almost certainly you will (at least soon) be aware that
building sites can be very dangerous places. Working with our teams we believe will help you to provide safer sites as well as better value and
more readily marketable homes. Our specialist services deliver best value and protect the interests of land owners, house-builder developers,
professionals and private individuals seeking to build their dream home. Our off-site construction systems also reduce the amount of material that gets
wasted on site, helping to avoid land fill, hazardous waste separation and handling, and delivers better value for you and your customers.
