Selling the Energy Saving Message
Ikea has teamed with renewable energy firm Solarcentury to sell PV panels and storage batteries. The products can complement existing solar panels or deliver a new system. IKRA aims to “make it easier for homeowners to save on their electricity bills”.
IKEA hot off the mark
Never slow to get in on a good thing, IKEA has been quick on the uptake for trends and customer preferences. It was only a coupler of weeks ago that your Weekly Insight reported E-on’s research finding that 44% of people wanted Solar & Battery storage by 2020. Clearly they are now positioning themselves to capitalise on what must be the opening up of a massive market demand.60/40 Split between use and grid sell backIKEA reckons that on average UK homes with solar capabilities typically consume around 40% of all the solar electricity generated, or even less if they are regularly out during the day, and send the unused 60% back to the National Grid, albeit at a loss compared to its value.
More Bang for Customers Buck
In IKEA’s view, adding a storage system means “unused solar electricity can be used at a later time, meaning the amount of solar electricity an average home can use doubles to 80%”. In this way it believes home electricity bills can be reduced by up to 70%.
Only 12 years needed to pay back near £7,000 cost
Panels and battery storage costs £6,925 for an installation using 40% of solar electricity. IKEA calculates that this could save £380 in the first year after installation. However, if a battery were installed to double usage to 80% then this would increase to £560, enabling “homeowners can pay off the capital invested in the system in roughly 12 years”.
Clean Green Energy = Trees
Encouraging people to “Energise your home with renewable energy”, IKEA has joined in the mission to help tackle climate change by using “Green & Clean Energy”. By installing home solar, they state that buyers will save tons of carbon emissions over the life of your system. For example, they say “installing a typical home solar system is the equivalent of having 55** trees in your back garden.”2020 Target = Produce What We ConsumeIKEA also claim that they want their operations to become energy independent by producing as much renewable energy as they consume by 2020. They have already installed over 700,000 solar panels on their stores and buildings and feel it’s a natural step to give their customers the opportunity to do the same.Images courtesy of Ikea - Read more & calculate how much you could save
Renewable Energy as Part of Building Fabric
Weekly Insight’s report on changing home owner & buyer preferences of 3rd August, placed this in the context of a search for ‘Autonomous Housing’. IKEA’s grasp and promotion of the benefits of ‘home energy producers’ brings this many steps closer. Within the next couple of years expect to see PV & Battery Storage incorporated into the fabric of all new buildings. Having been at the forefront of such thinking since the mid 1970’s, we are already doing this for many clients and their architects. Already all of our roofs, for example, are designed to support and easily accommodate PV’s with provision being made for the inclusion of battery storage.
Planners, architects, technical designers, engineers and their builder clients, will now need to quickly adapt in many ways, e.g. aesthetics, structural strengths, mechanical, electrical, heating and acoustic engineering. We are fortunate in being able to address these, since our long heritage as designers and (house) builders, especially of timber structures, has prepared us better than most to be able to provide practical as well as theoretical assistance for clients and their professional advisors.
Consultancy ‘On Tap’
As long standing Chartered Building Consultants (CIOBC) and Chartered Surveyors (RICS), our approach to sustainable building is to use pre-fabrication to deliver the high quality buildings that architects and their clients want at prices they can afford using timber, as a renewable and recyclable material wherever it can practically deliver these benefits to our clients. Call us to arrange a visit to our factory and discussion with our in-house team of professionals for your next project. You’ll be glad you did!
